Poteet Strawberry Festival

This weekend is the world famous Poteet Strawberry Festival! Claimed to be one of the 250 best festivals in the nation. We have never been and when considering whether or not to go - I think its important to ask yourself two questions:

1. Do you love strawberries?

Answer: As a reader of this blog can probably infer- I am obsessed with berries. So Yes!

2. Where the hell is Poteet?

Answer: I have no idea. Let me check.

Intermission...

30 minutes South of San Antonio!

Its free Friday evening and $10.00 the other two days. Kids 12 and under free all days. Features everything you could ever make from strawberries (smoothies, pies, jams, so forth) and other normal festival fare (rides, country singers, the strawberry queen, so forth).

More info here: www.strawberryfestival.com/index.cfm

Sounds like heaven for me and my little berry monster.

  1. We've never been, either, but we will probably finally take advantage of the Friday Freebie this year. I think our Berry Meister(ess), at 3.5 yrs., will be just the right age. I've heard from many others who have gone over the years and enjoyed themselves.

Funny the things I've ignored for so long before having a kiddo in my life! Do we forget to have certain kinds of fun without children around to "justify" it? I know I have!

  2. The little berry monster's Great-Grandma Virgie was born in Poteet. You have to go!

  3. Its pretty neat as I used to go as a kid but from what I remember, be prepared to shell out for fried everything. I think they even had rodeo stuff.

  4. suz, kids are a great excuse to go fun places!
any place that produced grandma virgie and a plethora of fried foods is the place for me.

  5. fyi, most? of the strawberries are not local. ask someone b4 going where the local strawberries... it's becoming quickly commercialized, i hear.

  6. So we went Friday nite and enjoyed ourselves-- free admission always helps!

I'd have to say this felt more like the "Poteet Fair" or "Carnival" than my preconception of a "Strawberry Festival." That name somehow evoked for me the image of a huge, embellished farmer's market... So to find the full-on carnival rides and games (and at least one "freak show" attraction: "The Smallest Woman Alive!!!!")-- surprised us. Happily for us, Darling Daughter is a major thrill seeker, so the generous dose of kiddie rides suited us just fine.

If we were to do it over, I would have somehow allotted more time to spend with the vendors outside the official festival grounds: so many local folks (I am guessing here) offering a greater variety of foods (and I think at better prices) than what I saw inside the gates. With grandma and a toddler in tow, however, this might have been logistically challenging.

    Hope everyone else had fun.
